Israeli Airstrike on Hospital Kills Hamas Political Leader, According to Reports
The recent Israeli airstrike on a hospital in Gaza resulted in the deaths of five individuals, including medics, as reported by the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Among those killed was a senior Hamas political leader.

This airstrike took place against the backdrop of renewed hostilities in Gaza following the expiration of a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel on March 1. Efforts to agree on an extension of the truce, initially mediated by the US and Arab nations, have been unsuccessful.

As per the Gaza Health Ministry, the strike targeted the surgery department at the Nesser Medical Complex in Khan Younis. Medical personnel at the facility informed CNN that the attack occurred at night and ignited flames within the hospital.

The Israeli military stated it conducted the strike targeting a “key terrorist in the Hamas terrorist organization who was operating inside [the hospital].” They asserted that considerable intelligence was gathered prior to the attack, which utilized precision munitions to limit collateral damage.

Hamas confirmed that Ismail Barhoum, a member of its political office, along with his nephew, Ibrahim, were among the casualties. According to Hamas-affiliated Al-Aqsa TV, Barhoum had been receiving treatment at the Nasser Medical Complex for injuries he sustained in a prior Israeli airstrike.

Hamas condemned Barhoum’s death as indicative of Israel's “disregard for international norms and agreements,” highlighting that hospitals are granted special protection under the Geneva conventions during armed conflicts.

Last week, the Israeli military announced the resumption of both air and ground operations in the region, citing Hamas’s refusal to release hostages and its rejection of modified ceasefire terms. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office declared, “Israel will, from now on, act against Hamas with increasing military strength.”

In response, Hamas accused Israel of “unilaterally” terminating the ceasefire, as reported by Reuters.

Palestinian officials reported on Sunday that over 50,000 individuals have died in Gaza following nearly 18 months of conflict in the area. The war reignited on October 7, 2023, when Palestinian militants launched a surprise assault on Israeli cities, resulting in approximately 1,200 fatalities and the kidnapping of around 250 hostages.
