Ford stated, “Canada is the greatest country in the world” and emphasized that there is no possibility of it succumbing to Washington's rule. He remarked, “I will make him [Trump] a counteroffer. How about if we buy Alaska and throw in Minnesota and [its main city] Minneapolis at the same time?” He added, “So, you know, it is not realistic.”
The Premier acknowledged that Trump enjoys making such comments and joking about the idea of the U.S. annexing Canada. “I take that seriously. He may be joking, but under my watch that will never, ever happen,” he asserted.
Since his election victory in November, Trump has frequently referred to Canada as the “51st state,” claiming that most Canadians would “love” to join the U.S. On Tuesday, he proposed using “economic force” to absorb Canada, threatening to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian goods. He stated, “You get rid of that artificially-drawn line and you take a look at what that looks like, and it would also be much better for national security.”
On the same day, Trump shared maps on his Truth Social platform illustrating how the U.S. and Canada would appear as a single entity.
In an interview with CNN on Monday, Ford described Washington and Ottawa as “strongest allies” who should address their trade issues through dialogue. He emphasized, “We [Canada] ship down 4.3 million barrels of oil every single day. We send electricity down to the U.S., critical minerals. These are all areas and different sectors that Americans need and why disrupt that?”
Meanwhile, Canada’s outgoing prime minister, Justin Trudeau, expressed on X that “there is not a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the U.S.” He further noted that citizens of both nations benefit from their status as each other’s largest trading and security partner.
