DeepSeek recently introduced an open-source AI model known as R1, with its creators claiming it has surpassed key US-developed products on several industry performance measures. The introduction of R1 has contributed to a notable decrease in the stock values of prominent US tech firms, amounting to a loss of nearly $1 trillion in market capitalization.
In an interview with Fox News on Tuesday, Sacks stated that there is “substantial evidence” indicating that DeepSeek has “distilled the knowledge out of OpenAI’s models.” He compared the capabilities of R1 to those of OpenAI’s 01 model, released approximately four months ago.
Knowledge distillation is a technique where an AI model learns and improves from the feedback of a more advanced model, but it can sometimes infringe upon the terms of service set by the original developers. To mitigate these risks, developers have implemented various limits on data use and other restrictions. Sacks indicated that US companies are likely to enhance their defenses to prevent the emergence of “copycat models” soon.
In response to Sacks' comments, OpenAI acknowledged its awareness of certain Chinese and non-Chinese firms engaged in distilling American technologies. The company is actively pursuing “countermeasures to protect our [Intellectual Property].” The statement further emphasized their collaboration with the US government to safeguard advanced models from being appropriated by competitors and adversaries.
As reported by Bloomberg, OpenAI and its principal investor, Microsoft, are examining DeepSeek for possible infractions. Software developers typically need to pay licensing fees to utilize OpenAI technologies in their own applications, according to the news agency, which referenced sources “familiar with the matter” who chose to remain anonymous.
During a regular media briefing on Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt characterized the launch of DeepSeek as a “wake-up call to the American AI industry.” The Trump administration has prioritized AI development, and just last week, the president unveiled Stargate, an initiative aimed at establishing data centers across the United States to support future AI endeavors, with an investment goal of up to $500 billion.
