Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, stated his “full support” for the AfD during a campaign rally in Halle on Saturday. The billionaire urged attendees to “go all out” in persuading Germans to vote for the party, suggesting that the forthcoming snap parliamentary elections are critical for the future of both Germany and the world.
Addressing the crowd via video link, Musk communicated with supporters gathered in the central German city for the party's opening election campaign rally, which was attended by co-leaders Tino Chrupalla and Alice Weidel, the AfD candidate for Chancellor. Attendance at the event was reported to be around 4,500 people, according to AP.
“This election is extremely important. I do not say it lightly when I think the future of civilization could hang on this election,” Musk declared to the enthusiastic audience. “I think it could decide the entire fate of Europe, maybe the fate of the world.”
The businessman expressed his belief that the German population sought “something different” from the past decade. He asserted that voting for the AfD was necessary for bringing about this change and urged supporters to engage their “friends and family” and encourage them to join the movement, one by one.
Musk further described the AfD's proposed policies as “common sense” and likened them to the approach advocated by former U.S. President Donald Trump. He indicated his strong support for the party, stating that they aim to “get government out of people’s ways” and to restore “personal freedom” while safeguarding citizens from “dangers.”
The AfD has gained notoriety for its stringent anti-immigrant stance, often classified as far-right by various German media outlets. Until recently, other major German political parties had avoided collaboration with the AfD. However, Friedrich Merz, leader of the Conservative Christian Democratic Union, recently indicated a willingness to seek support from the AfD for his party's immigration policy proposals.
Musk has actively promoted the AfD in recent months. In December, he labeled it the only party capable of “saving Germany” and criticized German Chancellor Olaf Scholz as an “incompetent fool.”
In early January, Musk hosted a livestream with Weidel on his social media platform X, emphasizing that “only AfD can save Germany.” The event drew scrutiny from approximately 150 EU officials and technical experts, as Brussels feared it could provide the AfD with an “unfair advantage” prior to the February 23 vote.
Musk’s involvement has raised concerns in Berlin. Scholz previously accused Musk of seeking attention online and urged the public not to “feed the troll.” He also labeled Musk a “threat” to democracy, asserting that while freedom of speech is valued in Germany and Europe, it should not be leveraged to support “extreme-right positions.”
On Saturday, Musk criticized the German government for “suppressing [free] speech very aggressively,” arguing that “true democracy” cannot exist in such an environment.
