The US has initiated the deportation of hundreds of illegal immigrants back to their countries of origin following a nationwide surge in arrests, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced on Friday.
“Deportation flights have begun,” Leavitt posted on X, continuing, “President [Donald] Trump is sending a strong and clear message to the entire world: if you illegally enter the United States of America, you will face severe consequences.”
Leavitt shared two images depicting groups of men being escorted onto military transport planes. According to Fox News, one of the images was captured at Biggs Army Airfield at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. Sources from the network indicated that the aircraft shown transported 80 individuals to Guatemala.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have conducted a series of raids throughout the country this week, resulting in the arrest of over 500 individuals, with 373 detained for removal just on Thursday, according to the agency.
The cities affected by these raids included Boston, New York, Newark, and San Francisco, with a focus on immigrants who had committed additional crimes after unlawfully entering the United States, as stated by ICE.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka vocally denounced an ICE operation at a local fish market, claiming that agents breached the US Constitution by entering the premises without a warrant. “Newark will not stand by idly while people are being unlawfully terrorized,” he asserted, noting his commitment to “defend and protect civil and human rights.”
ICE apprehended individuals from a wide range of countries, including Afghanistan, Angola, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Senegal, and Venezuela, according to Fox News. Reportedly, among those detained were over a dozen gang members and several individuals guilty of child molestation.
During his campaign, Trump pledged to execute “the largest deportation operation in American history.” In a recent interview with MSNBC, he mentioned starting with the deportation of illegal immigrants who had committed crimes in the US, eventually addressing others without criminal records.
Estimates suggest that there are between 11 million and 35 million undocumented immigrants currently residing in the US.
Shortly after his inauguration earlier this week, Trump signed numerous executive orders aimed at enhancing border security. He declared a national emergency at the US-Mexico border, labeled drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, and abolished automatic birthright citizenship for children born to parents who are neither US citizens nor lawful permanent residents.
The Pentagon has deployed 1,500 soldiers and Marines to the border this week to aid in constructing barriers and facilitating the transport of detained migrants out of the country, as stated by acting Defense Secretary Robert Salesses on Wednesday.
“As commander-in-chief, I have no higher responsibility than to defend our country from threats and invasions, and that is exactly what I am going to do,” Trump proclaimed during his inaugural address.
