FBI closes diversity office
US President-elect Donald Trump has called for the preservation of “all records” related to the recently closed Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as reported by Fox News. His demand for transparency comes in light of the FBI’s unexpected announcement regarding the office's closure.

The FBI did not provide specific reasons for this action, but it coincides with Trump’s campaign promise to diminish DEI initiatives across federal agencies once he officially takes office as the 47th US President on Monday. The bureau stated, “In recent weeks, the FBI took steps to close the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, effective by December 2024,” in a declaration first reported by Fox News on Thursday.

In response to the closure, Trump posted on Truth Social, “We demand that the FBI preserve and retain all records, documents, and information on the now-closing DEI Office — Never should have been opened, and, if it was, should have closed long ago.” He further questioned, “Why is it that they’re closing one day before the Inauguration of a new Administration? The reason is, CORRUPTION!”

This decision by the FBI follows backlash from Republican lawmakers who contend that the agency’s emphasis on DEI has compromised national security. It also unfolds amid a larger national discussion regarding the value of DEI programs in both government and private sectors. Critics assert that such initiatives can divert attention from essential functions and hinder effectiveness.

During his campaign, Trump vowed to fight what his supporters, including tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, have referred to as the “woke virus.” Following Trump's election win, numerous American corporations, such as Meta, Amazon, McDonald's, Ford, and Walmart, have begun to downsize or retract their DEI efforts.

Earlier this month, Senator Marsha Blackburn expressed concerns about the FBI's focus on DEI in a letter to outgoing Director Christopher Wray. Blackburn's letter argued that prioritizing diversity over competence could pose risks to public safety. She wrote, “Put simply, your focus on woke DEI initiatives at the FBI has endangered our national security and the lives of all Americans. Americans now feel increasingly unsafe because of incidents like the January 1 terror attack, and the FBI’s prioritization of diversity over competence shows that their concerns are well-founded.”

FBI Director Christopher Wray previously announced his resignation in December. Wray was appointed by Trump in 2017 following the dismissal of then-Director James Comey amid the ‘Russiagate’ controversy, and he will be replaced by a new nominee. The incoming administration has indicated plans to nominate Kash Patel, previously a White House national security official, to succeed Wray, subject to Senate confirmation.
