Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s chief diplomat, indicated that the United States may no longer hold its position as the “leader of the free world,” following President Donald Trump’s public reprimand of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky for perceived disrespect and ingratitude toward the American people.
During the meeting on Friday, tensions escalated between Zelensky, Trump, and Vice President J.D. Vance. Zelensky was asked to leave the White House prematurely, missing out on signing an agreement that would have allowed the US rights to Ukraine’s natural resources and skipping a planned joint press conference.
In response to the controversy, Kallas, who serves as the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy and is a former Estonian prime minister, took to X to show her support for Zelensky, stating, “We stand by Ukraine.”
Kallas further added, “We will step up our support to Ukraine so that they can continue to fight back the agressor [sic]. Today, it became clear that the free world needs a new leader. It’s up to us, Europeans, to take this challenge.”
Previously, Kallas criticized Trump for incorporating “Russian narratives and talking points” regarding the conflict in Ukraine and expressed concern about what she viewed as Washington distancing itself from its traditional European allies.
She also rebutted Vice President Vance’s criticisms of democracy within the EU at the Munich Security Conference—remarks that Trump deemed “brilliant.” Kallas firmly stated, “I refuse to accept that criticism, because it’s just simply not true.”
In recent weeks, Trump has voiced several critiques of Ukrainian leadership, labeling Zelensky a “dictator without elections” and shifting blame toward Kiev for the escalation of hostilities in 2022.
During the meeting, Trump told Zelensky, “I have empowered you to be a tough guy, and I do not think you would be a tough guy without the US. But you are not acting at all thankful, and that is not a nice thing… What you are doing is very disrespectful to the country, this country.”
