Government AI, Safeguarding DOGE, and Other Highlights: Key Points from Elon Musk’s Three-Hour Talk with Joe Rogan
In a comprehensive interview featuring two prominent Trump supporters, the discussion unfolds against the backdrop of Musk's efforts to reshape the federal government.

This isn’t Musk’s first candid conversation with Rogan; he has visited the podcast multiple times, including twice last year, and former President Donald Trump has also been a guest leading up to the election.
During the discussion, Musk labeled non-governmental organizations as “maybe the biggest scam ever” after critiquing the U.S. Agency for International Development’s foreign aid, advocating for more air traffic controllers and suggesting that diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives have pushed out “a bunch of really good, talented old white guys” from the Federal Aviation Administration.
Musk has faced scrutiny recently regarding his role with the Department of Government Efficiency; he was spotted wearing a “tech support” shirt at a cabinet meeting with Trump. As a "special adviser" to the president, he has pushed for significant changes to the federal government, including eliminating federal agencies, implementing mass layoffs, and cutting budgets across various departments.
Here are the key takeaways from Musk’s discussion with Rogan.
**Defending DOGE**
Much of the conversation centered on DOGE, Musk's initiative aimed at reducing the size and expenditure of the government. He mentioned that DOGE continues to back ventures that “appear to be legitimate,” but he criticized several projects as ineffective, particularly those tied to USAID, which saw 90 percent of its contracts cut this week.
“It could be the kind of thing where you sort of fund Ebola prevention, but it turns out that actually you’re funding a lab that develops new Ebola,” Musk claimed, offering no proof of this assertion. “They claim it’s Ebola prevention, but it’s actually Ebola creation.”
Musk insisted that the cuts across the government stem from DOGE recommendations but emphasized that they are approved and enacted by the respective departments or agencies.
When discussing potential security concerns with DOGE staff having access to sensitive government data, Musk confirmed that all staff members are thoroughly vetted and obtain the necessary security clearances. “Anyone from DOGE has to go through the same vetting process that those federal employees went through,” he noted, while acknowledging the issue of data breaches. “But I mean, obviously the vast numbers of Social Security numbers have leaked onto the internet. People have hacked the government systems multiple times.”
**Social Security a ‘Ponzi scheme’**
Musk was particularly vocal about his critique of Social Security, referring to the entitlement program as “the biggest Ponzi scheme of all time.” He explained that the system places a financial strain on the government due to its future obligations for benefits.
“Basically, people are living way longer than expected, and there are fewer babies being born, so you have more people who are retired and live for a long time and get retirement payments,” he said. A federal report last year predicted that Social Security’s trust funds could be depleted by 2035. “However bad the financial situation is right now for the federal government, it’ll be much worse in the future,” Musk added.
**Government AI**
Musk shared his belief that AI could eventually handle government functions, though he did not elaborate on specific responsibilities. He anticipates that AI will surpass human intelligence by the end of the decade. This perspective aligns with efforts from leaders at the General Services Administration to develop a chatbot named GSAi aimed at increasing productivity among workers and optimizing processes.
However, Musk expressed concerns about AI potentially adopting extreme liberal perspectives, saying, “One of the concerns would be if there’s a super oppressive woke nanny AI that is omnipotent and executes you if you misgender someone.” He concluded that “that would be a miserable outcome.”
