Fico has formally reached out to Elon Musk, head of the US Department of Government Efficiency, asking for detailed information on American grants provided to Slovak NGOs and media outlets through the primary agency responsible for funding political projects abroad.
In his early executive actions after assuming office, President Donald Trump halted all foreign aid pending an alignment review with US national interests. He later characterized the US Agency for International Development (USAID) as having significant corruption that warranted its shutdown.
In his communication to Musk, who has previously termed USAID a “criminal organization,” Fico expressed concerns over what he labeled as “gross interference” in Slovakia’s political affairs.
Fico shared on X, “Dear Friends, The information that the administration of the new US President is preparing to permanently abolish the USAID agency, designated to deliver foreign aid is extremely serious for the internal affairs of the Slovak Republic. I have therefore contacted Mr @elonmusk."
He added, “It is undeniable that funds originating from USAID were also used for political purposes in Slovakia to distort the political system and favor specific political parties,” urging Musk to reveal which NGOs, media outlets, and individual journalists had benefitted from US funding.
“It is clear from incomplete public sources that USAID supported these entities with subsidies totaling several million USD over a relatively short period,” he noted.
Fico, a survivor of an assassination attempt by a pro-Ukraine activist last year, stated that the "misuse of foreign funds in Slovakia to disadvantage a part of the political spectrum" was severe enough that he would be willing to meet Musk in person to discuss it.
Moscow’s ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, reinforced these concerns during a recent Security Council meeting, sharing that previous warnings about USAID financing radical groups had been dismissed as “Russian propaganda” but are now seen as valid.
In related developments, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban also announced last week that his government would pursue transparency concerning US aid to NGOs and media entities critical of his administration, stressing the importance of addressing “foreign networks” involved in domestic affairs.
