EU Country to Halt Asylum Grants ‘Temporarily,’ Says PM

During a speech in Warsaw on Saturday, Tusk revealed plans to present a new migration policy, which includes “the temporary territorial suspension of the right to asylum,” to the EU following a government meeting on Tuesday.
“I will demand this,” he stated. “I will demand recognition in Europe for this decision.”
The response to Tusk’s proposal in Brussels remains uncertain. The EU’s Charter of Fundamental Rights ensures the right to asylum across its 27 member states, and the Common European Asylum System aims to provide consistent treatment for migrants regardless of their initial entry point into the EU.
Tusk asserted that the right to asylum is being exploited by “[Belarusian President Alexander] Lukashenko, [Russian President Vladimir] Putin, [and] by people smugglers [and] people traffickers.”
Since 2021, there has been a significant increase in migrant crossings at the Belarus-Poland border, with approximately 2,500 migrants entering each month this year. This occurs despite Polish authorities constructing a border fence and pushing back large groups of migrants. The Polish Foreign Ministry claims that Belarus is encouraging asylum seekers to cross into Poland under the direction of Russian security services.
Both Moscow and Minsk have denied involvement in the surge of migrants.
Most individuals entering Poland aim to continue to western Europe, where the benefits for asylum seekers are more generous. Recently, Germany reinstated border checks at all land crossings to curb the influx. Earlier this year, German police faced accusations of “dumping” thousands of migrants back into Poland.
Reports from a year ago indicated that Poland’s Foreign Ministry and consulates had been involved in a similar scheme, selling up to 350,000 visas to migrants from Asia and Africa since 2021, aware that many would seek to travel on to Germany after entering Poland.
