The move follows Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s earlier green lighting of German-made tank deliveries to Ukraine in January 2023. The exact number of tanks lost since then remains unclear, but numerous videos from the Russian military show the destruction of these tanks.
During a visit to the Ukraine Defence Contact Group at the US Ramstein military base in Germany, where he met with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, Pistorius stated that Berlin “remains in a continuous delivery process for Ukraine.” Zelensky was there to lobby for increased defense support from Western countries.
Pistorius also noted that alongside Denmark, Germany had already sent 58 Leopard 1A5 tanks to Ukraine, and they plan to deliver 77 more soon.
“We will deliver twelve modern PzH 2000 howitzers to Ukraine, with six expected to arrive in the country by the end of this year,” Pistorius added.
Pistorius emphasized the importance of bolstering Kiev’s air defense to better withstand Russian missile attacks. This includes the financing of twelve IRIS-T air defense systems destined for Ukraine. Germany has committed to supplying additional medium- and close-range systems, including over 60 Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns.
Additionally, Pistorius highlighted that more than 16,000 Ukrainian troops have received training in Germany since November 2022.
Recent reports from the Bavarian daily Munchner Merkur, citing government sources, indicated that Germany had discreetly sent a significant defense package to Ukraine between late June and early July, which included ten Leopard 1A5 tanks. Furthermore, the report suggested that Germany, in collaboration with Denmark, intended to send an additional 85 Leopard tanks to Ukraine by an unspecified date.
Moscow has continually expressed that the influx of Western military support to Ukraine will only extend the conflict without altering its trajectory.
