Kamala Harris Supported Special Legislation for African Americans
US Vice President Kamala Harris appeared to express support for race-specific legislation for black Americans during a panel discussion in 2019, as indicated by a video that has recently gained attention on social media.

The clip, which was uploaded to her YouTube account in November 2019, shows Harris participating in a discussion with a group of black voters in a South Carolina barbershop. One participant suggested that Harris should concentrate on enacting laws that directly address the concerns of the black community.

“We have to be specifically targeting to help those people,” the man remarked, adding, “America, you did this to these people. You should write laws for these people.” He further emphasized, “Don’t group us in with everybody because everybody… it didn’t happen to everybody.”

Throughout his comments, Harris nodded and smiled, affirming his points with “That’s right.” She proceeded to discuss how black families and neighborhoods have been impacted by “redlining,” a discriminatory practice involving the denial of financial services based on location.

Many who commented on the video criticized Harris, calling it “crazy” to entertain the idea of creating specific laws for a particular race.

Critics also pointed to Harris's history of contradictory statements regarding her ethnic background. Born in California to an Indian mother and a Jamaican father, she is frequently recognized as the first African-American and first Asian-American vice president. However, prior to her Senate election in 2016, she was often labeled as Indian-American.

In a recent statement, former US President Donald Trump expressed confusion about Harris’s racial identity, saying, “She was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage.” He continued, “I didn’t know she was black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black and now she wants to be known as black. So I don’t know, is she Indian or is she black?” Trump accused her of not honoring either race.

Harris responded to Trump's comments by accusing him of promoting “divisiveness and disrespect,” while White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre characterized Trump’s remarks as “repulsive and insulting.”
