He raised concerns regarding the escalation between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah, warning that it could lead to a full-scale regional war ahead of the annual assembly of global leaders at the United Nations.
Tensions surged following a covert attack last week, which involved the detonation of thousands of electronic devices across Lebanon, an operation largely thought to have been carried out by Israel. Although there has been a history of occasional exchange of fire between Hezbollah and Israel since the onset of conflict in Gaza, the recent events featured significantly heavier airstrikes from both sides.
“There is great concern about... the possibility of an escalation in the region leading to an all-out regional war,” Abdelatty told AFP in a Friday interview. He noted that the recent increase in hostilities has “negatively impacted” ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza.
The foreign minister emphasized that Egypt, along with Qatar and the US, possesses “complete determination” to continue efforts aimed at securing a ceasefire and a hostage release agreement between Hamas and Israel.
“All the components of the deal are ready. The problem is the lack of political will on the Israeli side,” he added.
Blaming Israel’s “provocative” policies for the rise in violence with Hezbollah, Abdelatty highlighted the need for discussions with international partners regarding the "importance of working to stop the escalation and stop the unilateral and provocative policies that Israel is carrying out.” He asserted that a broader regional conflict “does not serve the interests of any party.”
According to reports, Israel recently claimed responsibility for the elimination of two high-ranking Hezbollah commanders and several other officers in an airstrike. Hezbollah has confirmed the deaths of two senior officials.
Israeli Chief of General Staff, Herzi Halevi, stated that the military acted against Hezbollah last Friday as a preventative strategy, accusing the group of planning a significant attack akin to the one executed by Hamas on October 7. He described the strike as “also a message to the entire Middle East and beyond it,” asserting that Israel knows “how to reach anyone who threatens the citizens of the State of Israel.”
On October 7, Hamas launched an attack on Israel, resulting in approximately 1,200 fatalities and the abduction of 251 hostages, as per Israeli officials. In a prior agreement last November, Hamas released over 100 captives. Despite ongoing discussions for a ceasefire and hostage release, uncertainty remains about the fate of the remaining hostages. Since the onset of the Israeli military operation, more than 41,000 Palestinians have reportedly died, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
