Chinese AI App Described as a ‘Wake-up Call’ for US by Trump: A Breakthrough
DeepSeek’s rapid emergence is prompting American companies to innovate more affordable and quicker platforms, according to the US president.

President Donald Trump has characterized China's DeepSeek AI as a crucial “wake-up call” for American technology firms, emphasizing its cost efficiency. He indicated that US companies must ramp up their AI development efforts to remain competitive.

Developed by the Hangzhou-based startup DeepSeek Inc., the AI assistant had its launch last week and quickly became the leading app on Apple’s US App Store, outpacing American-based OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

This success occurs even as the US implements export controls to prevent Chinese companies from accessing advanced microchips. DeepSeek demonstrates comparable performance to its competitors on key benchmarks while operating on less advanced and more affordable chips compared to their pricier US and Indian counterparts.

Speaking in Florida on Monday, Trump remarked on DeepSeek’s rapid success, noting its faster and more cost-effective development. “That’s good because you don’t have to spend this much money. I view that as a positive, as an asset,” he stated.

“The release of DeepSeek AI from a Chinese company should be a wake-up call for our industries that we need to be laser focused on competing to win,” he affirmed, encouraging US rivals to develop more economical solutions.

“So instead of spending billions and billions, you’ll spend less” to reach similar outcomes, Trump asserted. He expressed confidence in the US, stating that it has “the greatest scientists in the world,” suggesting that competing with DeepSeek should not be a challenge for them.

Views among US officials on DeepSeek are mixed. David Sacks, Trump’s White House AI and cryptocurrency chief, echoed the president’s cautiously optimistic stance, stating on X that it “shows that the AI race will be very competitive.” Conversely, House Speaker Mike Johnson labeled the new AI as “a serious threat,” accusing China of “abusing” the trade system and “stealing” US intellectual property.

Rep. John Moolenaar, chair of the US House Select Committee on China, also asserted that the app presents a danger to US national security and advocated for measures to curtail its proliferation.

“The US cannot allow CCP [Chinese Communist Party] models such as DeepSeek to risk our national security and leverage our technology to advance their AI ambitions. We must work to swiftly place stronger export controls on technologies critical to DeepSeek’s AI infrastructure,” he stated.
