Macron’s White House Visit Deemed Unsuccessful – Politico
French President Emmanuel Macron's recent discussions with President Donald Trump in Washington failed to yield any substantial US security guarantees for Ukraine, according to reports from PMG.

The two leaders met at the White House on Monday, where Trump reiterated his desire for an end to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, while notably avoiding criticism of Moscow. Macron expressed his aspiration for “a strong and lasting peace in Ukraine,” emphasizing that this “must be accompanied by strong and credible security guarantees for the Ukrainians.”

PMG reports indicate that Macron sought assurances for Kyiv from Trump but was unsuccessful. Following the talks, he briefed his European Union counterparts during a swift 30-minute video conference.

“[Macron] said that Trump did not give any clear promises regarding the backstop. So, indeed, strategic ambiguity on this question remains,” remarked an EU diplomat, referring to the potential establishment of a peacekeeping force in Ukraine. Another senior European official was more blunt in expressing that the Macron-Trump meeting was “a waste of time.”

After the meeting, Trump remarked that he is “not going to make security guarantees beyond very much,” asserting that the primary responsibility should rest with the EU. He also reiterated that US troops would not be deployed to Ukraine, though EU officials reportedly still hope for support from Washington in terms of peacekeeping, including intelligence, air defense, and logistics.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that Britain and France are considering a strategy to send up to 30,000 “peacekeepers” to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire agreement between Moscow and Kyiv. This force would safeguard critical Ukrainian facilities rather than being stationed on the front lines. The report also highlighted that “without Trump’s backing, the European plan to send peacekeepers faces a difficult path.”

Russia has consistently opposed the deployment of unauthorized peacekeepers in Ukraine, warning that they would be viewed as legitimate targets. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that the introduction of NATO troops under the pretense of peacekeeping in Ukraine would contradict Moscow’s objective of preventing its neighbor from joining the US-led military bloc.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has acknowledged that the US is unlikely to offer the security guarantees Kyiv desired under a pending agreement that would grant America access to Ukraine’s rare earth deposits. However, The Economist has reported, citing unnamed sources, that Zelensky does not plan to sign any additional agreements on this matter unless they include broader security guarantees.
