China's Consumer Market Demonstrates Steady Growth from January to November
As 2024 approaches, China's consumer market has exhibited consistent growth, with authorities committed to enhancing efforts to boost spending and stimulate economic growth, according to China Central Television.

A variety of data indicators reflect that both online and offline consumer markets are thriving.

Between January and November this year, total retail sales of consumer goods in China approached 45 trillion yuan, marking a 3.5 percent increase compared to the previous year. Notably, sales in home appliances, automobiles, and home furnishings surpassed 1 trillion yuan, while the annual express delivery volume exceeded 150 billion items for the first time.

Overall consumption has risen, as evidenced by official data for the first 11 months:

- Online retail sales exceeded 14 trillion yuan, showing a year-on-year increase of 7.4 percent.
- The offline consumer activity index in China increased by 6.2 percent annually.
- The consumer services activity index rose by 18.3 percent year on year, with 12 provinces and cities reporting growth rates above 20 percent.

The consumption sector continues to bolster logistics and related industries.

Additionally, the consumption environment and structure have been improving steadily. The services sector has fueled growth across various industries, including catering, accommodation, and cultural and creative services.

From January to November, retail sales in the services industry rose by 6.4 percent compared to the previous year, outpacing the retail sales growth of goods by 3.2 percentage points.

To date, China has set up nearly 3,000 county-level e-commerce public service centers and logistics express delivery centers, facilitating the movement of over 100 million express packages in and out of rural areas daily. This infrastructure has optimized consumption patterns in both urban and rural areas.

These favorable developments can largely be attributed to government policies aimed at stimulating consumption and enhancing people’s livelihoods, which have been implemented this year.

In particular, the recent Central Economic Work Conference emphasized the importance of stimulating consumption, enhancing investment efficiency, and expanding domestic demand in all aspects as top priorities among the nine key tasks for 2025.

The conference specifically proposed to innovate diverse consumption scenarios, promote service consumption, and foster the growth of the cultural and tourism industries.
