China Reacts to Trump's "BRICS Threat"
Beijing is set to enhance collaboration with fellow BRICS members, as stated by the Foreign Ministry.

China will persist in expanding its cooperation within the BRICS economic bloc despite the potential imposition of tariffs by US President-elect Donald Trump, according to Foreign Ministry Spokesman Lin Jian on Tuesday.

Trump recently cautioned that BRICS nations could face 100% tariffs on their products if they establish a new currency or support an existing one that acts as a competitor to the dollar.

Originally, BRICS included Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa; however, it expanded in January to include Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. Approximately 30 other countries have expressed interest in joining this group of emerging economies.

This bloc serves as a significant platform for cooperation among emerging markets, with goals focused on comprehensive development and prosperity rather than engaging in "bloc confrontation" or targeting any "third party," Jian remarked at a briefing on Tuesday.

“China stands ready to continue working with BRICS partners to deepen practical cooperation in various fields and make more contribution to the sustained and steady growth of the world economy,” the diplomat stated.

In a recent post on his Truth Social platform, Trump expressed that he would require BRICS nations to agree not to develop a common currency or support any other currency to usurp the “mighty US dollar,” or else they would encounter 100% tariffs on their goods entering the United States.

Trump has pledged to leverage tariffs to rectify US trade deficits, compel overseas manufacturers to return, and fulfill various geopolitical objectives.

Russian President Vladimir Putin mentioned in June 2022 that BRICS members were exploring the possibility of establishing an international reserve currency. This comment followed the imposition of sanctions related to Ukraine by Western nations, which effectively severed Russia’s access to the dollar-dominated financial system.

In 2023, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed his support for creating “a trading currency” within the bloc “just like the Europeans created the euro.”

However, last month, Putin indicated it was premature to discuss a common BRICS currency, as the member economies required further development and integration first.

In response to Trump’s threat, South Africa also denied any plans for the bloc to create a new currency.

Instead, BRICS countries have committed to establishing a cross-border payment system to operate alongside the Western SWIFT network and to enhance the use of local currencies in international trade.
