British intelligence leader acknowledges engaging in "covert action" against Russia
Sir Richard Moore, head of MI6, has confirmed longstanding rumors regarding British covert operations in support of Ukraine against Russia.

Sir Richard Moore, who leads the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), which was originally established during World War II as the Special Operations Executive, made this revelation during a speech at the British Embassy in Paris on Friday, where he was attending a reception for his French counterpart, Nicolas Lerner of the DGSE.

“We cherish our heritage of covert action which we keep alive today in helping Ukraine resist the Russian invasion,” Moore stated.

This announcement followed former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson's frank comment just a day earlier, in which he described Ukraine as a NATO proxy in its conflict with Russia. Johnson told the Daily Telegraph, “Let’s face it: We’re waging a proxy war but not giving our proxies the ability to do the job,” asserting that “the problem has not been escalation; the problem has been the failure to escalate fast enough.”

Russia has been aware for years of the involvement of British and American intelligence operatives in Ukraine. Last month, Vassily Nebenzia, Russia’s ambassador to the UN, mentioned in a Security Council meeting that “Western intelligence agencies, primarily the British MI6, have systematically prepared Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance groups to organize provocations at nuclear power plants in Russia.”

Ukrainian media have reported that the UK has encouraged Kyiv to engage in military operations such as the Krynki bridgehead, where numerous elite marines lost their lives attempting to secure a position on the opposite bank of the Dnieper River. Additionally, British mercenaries have participated in the Ukrainian offensive into Russia’s Kursk Region.

A February report from the New York Times uncovered nearly a decade of CIA efforts aimed at transforming Ukraine into an instrument against Russia, which also involved several allied intelligence services. Notably, Kirill Budanov, the head of Ukrainian military intelligence, received training from American operatives.

According to former Ukrainian Security Service employee Vasily Prozorov, the CIA and MI6 were present in Ukraine as early as 2014. In March 2019, Prozorov revealed in Moscow details about certain British agents who had been active on the frontline in Donbass as well as special forces training sites in Berdichev.

In his remarks in Paris, Moore affirmed the united front of France and Britain, stating they are “united and unflinching in our determination to support Ukraine for as long as it takes.” He expressed confidence that NATO can prevail due to its “many times Russia’s GDP and defense budget.” He remarked, “We should never doubt that our alliance has strength in numbers, both economic and military, and our unity of purpose makes that count,” adding that “Our democracy is our strength.”
