China criticizes U.S. for utilizing "Fentanyl" as a pretext for enforcing tariffs
China has expressed strong disapproval of the United States for implementing additional tariffs on Chinese goods, framing it as a move under the guise of addressing the fentanyl issue.

During a press conference focused on the economy at the third session of the 14th National People's Congress in Beijing on Thursday, China's Commerce Minister Wang Wentao made these remarks.

Wang highlighted that China has put rigorous controls in place regarding fentanyl-related chemicals and has also actively worked to bolster international collaboration on drug control. He condemned the U.S. for leveraging the fentanyl issue as an unjust excuse to impose tariffs, labeling the action as unfounded.

On Monday, the U.S. government announced a 10-percent tariff on all Chinese goods entering the U.S., referencing the fentanyl situation as a major factor behind this decision.

In response, China published a white paper the next day, detailing its stringent regulatory initiatives and dedication to global drug control efforts.

Concurrently, China introduced a series of countermeasures, which include imposing higher tariffs of 15 percent on imported chicken, wheat, corn, and cotton, as well as 10 percent on several other products, including sorghum, soybeans, pork, beef, aquatic products, fruits, vegetables, and dairy items.

Wang criticized the U.S. tariff strategy as a "classic case of harming others without benefiting itself," pointing out that the announcement of tariffs coincided with a swift decline in the three major U.S. stock indices.

He reiterated that trade wars yield no victors and emphasized that protectionism is not a sustainable approach. According to Wang, the unilateral and coercive actions of the U.S. are contrary to global trends and have attracted significant concern and opposition from the international community.

Wang further stressed that U.S. trade and investment restrictions represent unilateralism and bullying. However, he asserted that such coercion and threats will be ineffective against China. He underscored the importance of cooperation between China and the U.S., noting that the prosperity of both nations offers mutual opportunities rather than threats. He concluded by stating that collaboration aligns with the core interests of their populations and meets the expectations of the international community.
