Several individuals lost their lives when a car drove into the Lapu Lapu street festival late Saturday local time, according to police reports.
The incident took place at East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street, resulting in multiple pedestrian injuries. Authorities confirmed that the vehicle's driver was taken into custody.
The suspect has been identified as a 30-year-old male from Vancouver, though the reasons for his actions remain unclear.
Local media indicate that those killed and injured were participants of the annual Lapu Lapu festival, which honors Filipino heritage.
Initial reports indicated that there were multiple fatalities and more than a dozen injuries after an SUV crashed into the closed-off area filled with festivalgoers.
Videos shared on social media showed ambulances and police vehicles responding to the scene, with injured individuals lying on the ground. Footage also included a damaged black SUV believed to be involved in the incident.
Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim expressed his shock, stating on X that he was “shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific incident” at the street festival, extending his thoughts to those affected and the Filipino community in Vancouver during this challenging time.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described himself as “devastated” by the events, offering condolences to the families of victims and thanking first responders for their “swift action.”
Witnesses recounted harrowing scenes, with one telling the Vancouver Sun, “there were bodies on the street. They were run over. Some were already dead on the spot.” Another bystander noted that at least two children were among the injured.
