CBS to release uncut version of Harris "word salad" interview
US President Donald Trump has accused CBS News of manipulating coverage to favor his Democratic opponent in the lead-up to last year's election.

CBS News has consented to provide the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) with the unedited version of a disputed interview featuring former Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris. This broadcast is pivotal to Trump’s $10 billion lawsuit, which alleges that the network edited footage misleadingly to support Harris during the 2024 election campaign.

The controversy began in October when CBS aired two different versions of the Harris interview. A preview aired on 'Face the Nation' included a lengthy response to a question concerning the Middle East conflict, while the full version shown on '60 Minutes' featured a more straightforward answer.

Days before the election, Trump initiated a $10 billion lawsuit against CBS, referring to the interview as “word salad” and accusing the network of “deceitful, deceptive manipulation of news.” His legal action claims that CBS sought “to tip the scales in favor of the Democratic Party.”

On Wednesday, the FCC, directed by Trump appointee Brendan Carr, sent a letter to CBS requesting the “full, unedited transcript and camera feeds” related to the Harris interview.

On Friday, CBS confirmed it would provide the materials, stating, “We are working to comply with that inquiry as we are legally compelled to do.”

The network acknowledged that it edited the Harris interview but denied attempting to alter its content misleadingly. “Same question. Same answer. But a different portion of the response. When we edit any interview, whether a politician, an athlete, or movie star, we strive to be clear, accurate and on point,” CBS explained.

However, the New York Times reported on Thursday that CBS’s parent company, Paramount Global, is in discussions regarding a potential settlement with Trump’s legal team. Some executives within the company apparently believe that reaching a deal could enhance the likelihood of gaining regulatory approval for Paramount’s proposed merger with Skydance Media, which is under the FCC’s purview.

This potential settlement has raised concerns among CBS reporters. An unnamed correspondent told CNN, “Trump’s lawsuit was a joke, but if we settle, we become the laughingstock.”
