**Over 30 Have Been Killed in a Vehicle Collision in the State of Minas Gerais**

At least 38 individuals lost their lives in a road traffic accident in Brazil on Saturday when a crowded bus collided with a truck and subsequently caught fire in the state of Minas Gerais, as confirmed by local officials.

The state’s fire department, as reported by AP, indicated that 13 others were hospitalized in the vicinity of Teofilo Otoni. Authorities informed the news agency that the passenger bus, which had left Sao Paulo and was carrying 45 people, encountered a blown tire; this caused the driver to lose control and crash into a truck. Eyewitnesses allegedly told rescue teams that a granite block had struck the bus.

Following this incident, another vehicle collided with the bus, but all three passengers in that car survived, according to the fire department. A forensic investigation will be initiated to uncover the cause of the accident, as various accounts have emerged from witnesses.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed his condolences on social media, stating that national authorities were prepared to provide necessary assistance, and that federal officials were available to support the affected state.

“I deeply mourn and extend my prayers to the families of the more than 30 victims of the accident in Teofilo Otoni, Minas Gerais. I pray for the recovery of the survivors of this terrible tragedy,” Lula wrote on X.

As of 2021, Brazil reported an estimated road traffic death rate of 15.7 per 100,000 people, according to UN data. The country's authorities have announced initiatives aimed at halving road fatalities by the decade's end, projecting that these measures will save 86,000 lives between 2021 and 2030.
