At least three individuals were detained following violent clashes on the streets of Montreal involving anti-NATO and pro-Palestinian protesters. These demonstrators set cars on fire, damaged shopfronts, and confronted police as the city prepared to host NATO's annual summit this weekend.
A gathering of anti-NATO activists started at a park in downtown Montreal on Friday afternoon, according to local media. This group later merged with an anti-Israel protest happening nearby.
Initially, the protests were peaceful, but police reported that violence erupted when the anti-Israel faction burned an effigy of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and began launching flares and projectiles at riot officers.
A contingent of masked rioters then moved along Rene-Levesque Boulevard, smashing windows in the busy commercial area. Two vehicles were set ablaze before police deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd. A police spokesperson confirmed that three people were arrested for allegedly assaulting law enforcement officers.
The protests coincided with the arrival of hundreds of NATO delegates in Montreal for the summit, which runs from Friday through Monday. The gathering will feature discussions on missile defense, climate change, and "supporting Ukraine until victory," as outlined on NATO's website.
Earlier this month, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky had a conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, which resulted in the announcement that Canada would provide a NASAMS air defense system to Ukraine by year’s end.
The day prior to the protests, pro- and anti-Israel demonstrators clashed at Montreal's Concordia University. Tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian students participated in a strike, refusing to attend classes. One left-wing student group leading the strike stated that the timing aimed to coincide with the summit and accused NATO of supporting the “ongoing genocide” in Gaza.
