Biden Labels Trump Supporters as ‘Garbage’
During a Zoom call with Hispanic activists, US President Joe Biden referred to Donald Trump's supporters as “garbage.” Read Full Article at RT.com.
Biden's remarks stemmed from a joke made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who had compared Puerto Rico to “a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean.” “Just the other day, a speaker at [the Trump] rally called Puerto Rico a floating island of garbage,” Biden remarked, emphasizing that Puerto Ricans are “good, decent honorable people.” He added, “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American.” Biden underscored that this rhetoric is “totally contrary to everything we’ve done, everything we’ve been.”
In response to his comments, Biden accused Trump of attempting to “divide the country based on race,” insisting that Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate, “will be a president for all of America.” Later, Biden took to X to clarify his statement, explaining, “I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage. That’s all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don’t reflect who we are as a nation.”
Biden’s remarks drew swift condemnation from Trump’s allies. Republican Senator Marco Rubio criticized the president, asserting, “He’s talking about everyday Americans who love their country. We are not garbage, we are patriots who love America,” during a Trump rally in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
Hinchcliffe himself defended his joke, stating that Democrats were overreacting and claiming that the Harris team took his remarks out of context to make them appear racist. “These people have no sense of humor,” he wrote on X.
The exchange highlights a broader trend in US politics, where both parties have accused each other of hateful rhetoric and demonization. Some conservatives have likened Biden’s “garbage” comment to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 description of Trump supporters as a “basket of deplorables,” while Trump has faced criticism for labeling his opponents an “enemy from within.”
