Biden declares ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah
The armistice proposed by the US is set to commence at 4am local time.

US President Joe Biden revealed that both Israel and Hezbollah have consented to the permanent ceasefire proposal put forth by Washington, effective Wednesday morning.

Tensions between Israel and the Shia militia in southern Lebanon intensified in September, leading the Israel Defense Forces to conduct a series of airstrikes followed by the deployment of ground troops.

“I just spoke with the prime ministers of Israel and Lebanon,” Biden stated on Tuesday during his remarks in the Rose Garden at the White House. “I’m pleased to announce that their governments have accepted the US proposal to end the devastating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.”

According to the US president, the ceasefire aims “to be a permanent cessation of hostilities.”

As part of the armistice's conditions, the Lebanese army and police are to be deployed to the Israel-Lebanon border within the next 60 days. At the same time, Israel will “gradually withdraw its remaining forces and civilians,” Biden noted. He also emphasized that Hezbollah and “other terrorist organizations will not be allowed” in the area.

Just hours prior to the announcement, Israeli jets targeted Beirut and other Lebanese cities, while Hezbollah launched rockets into the Galilee region of Israel.

The Israeli government voted overwhelmingly in support of the US proposal, with only one minister opposed, as stated by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office. Nevertheless, West Jerusalem “maintains its right to act against any threat to its security.”

During his speech in the Rose Garden, Biden also called on Hamas to consider a ceasefire in Gaza.

“Hamas has a choice to make. Their only way out is to release hostages, including American citizens, which they hold and in the process bring an end to the fighting, which would make possible a surge of humanitarian relief,” he remarked.

Israel declared war on the Gaza-based Palestinian group following its raid on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of more than 1,100 Israelis, with around 250 individuals taken captive.
