Zhongguancun Forum reveals leading technological innovations
The 2025 Zhongguancun Forum commenced on Thursday, revealing a list of 10 significant scientific and technological achievements. The opening ceremony was attended by representatives from China's Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Education, along with prominent universities and companies who collaborated to present the achievements.

China's 'artificial sun' sets new fusion record

Known as the "artificial sun," the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) simulates nuclear fusion reactions akin to those occurring in the sun and investigates critical issues surrounding controlled nuclear fusion. On January 15, 2025, the EAST team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences accomplished a remarkable feat by achieving steady-state, long-pulse, high-confinement mode plasma operation for 1,066 seconds, with temperatures surpassing 100 million degrees Celsius. This achievement sets a new world record for tokamak operations in high-confinement mode.

China's fourth-generation light source facility

The High Energy Photon Source (HEPS) in China, recognized as the world's most brilliant fourth-generation synchrotron light source, marked a significant milestone on October 12, 2024. The facility's W73 wiggler produced high-energy X-rays that traversed a 350-meter beamline to the Hard X-ray Imaging station, capturing images with sub-micron resolution in just 0.1 seconds of exposure. This breakthrough highlights the facility's potential for multi-scale, multi-contrast imaging, crucial for aerospace material analysis, life sciences research, and industrial research and development.

HEPS is designed to be one of the brightest fourth-generation synchrotron radiation facilities globally and has now entered its final joint commissioning phase, with full operations expected by late 2025.

China's first ocean drilling vessel

In November 2024, China's first domestically designed and built deep-ocean drilling vessel, Meng Xiang, was commissioned in Guangzhou City. Developed by the China State Shipbuilding Corporation, this vessel features a modular design and has successfully tackled multiple world-class technical challenges. With a maximum drilling depth of 11,000 meters, it functions as a "mobile maritime laboratory," capable of maneuvering and operating in unrestricted ocean areas worldwide.

The list also emphasizes several AI-driven innovations, including developments in high-performance alloys, protein structure prediction, biomaterials innovation, pediatric healthcare assistance, personalized learning, financial anti-fraud systems, embodied large-model robots, and AI-powered smartphone agents.

The Zhongguancun Forum, taking place from March 27 to 31 in Beijing, is centered on the theme "New Quality Productive Forces and Global Technological Cooperation," featuring 128 events divided into five sections.

Since its establishment in 2007 under the permanent theme of "Innovation and Development," the ZGC Forum has conducted 15 editions, hosting numerous parallel forums and related events that have collectively drawn hundreds of thousands of participants.
