Zelensky Dismisses Trump's Appeal for Peace
Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has declined a proposal by US President-elect Donald Trump for an immediate ceasefire and peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.

After a meeting with Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Saturday, Trump shared an extensive post on his Truth Social platform, stating that “there should be an immediate ceasefire and negotiations should begin” to resolve the Ukraine conflict. He claimed that Ukraine “would like to make a deal and stop the madness.”

Zelensky, however, countered this assertion in a post on X the following day, emphasizing that the conflict “cannot simply end with a piece of paper and a few signatures.”

He further explained that “A ceasefire without guarantees can be reignited at any moment... To ensure that Ukrainians no longer suffer losses, we must guarantee the reliability of peace and not turn a blind eye to occupation.”

Zelensky highlighted the plight of civilians in occupied areas, noting that “in the occupied territories of Ukraine, at least several million people remain,” and once more dismissed any possibility of Kiev ceding territory to Moscow for the sake of peace.

He asserted, “It is precisely such peace through strength that we discuss with all our partners, as well as the steps and guarantees needed for the people and the state attacked by Russia.”

Trump has previously claimed he could resolve the Ukraine conflict within a day if he were to return to the White House, criticizing the outgoing US administration for what he views as excessive financial support for Ukraine. Reports suggest he may attempt to implement a freeze of the conflict along the current battle lines, leveraging US aid to Ukraine.

Moscow, on the other hand, has consistently rejected the idea of freezing the conflict. It maintains that any resolution can only occur if Ukraine withdraws its forces from Russian territory, including the previously Ukrainian regions, guarantees the rights of its Russian-speaking population, and commits to a policy of neutrality.
