US Navy Prohibits DeepSeek, Media Reports
American service personnel have been advised that using the Chinese-developed AI model raises security and ethical concerns.

The US Navy has prohibited its sailors from utilizing the artificial intelligence model created by the Chinese company DeepSeek, as reported by CNBC on Tuesday.

In a communication sent to service members on Friday, the Navy indicated that DeepSeek’s R1 model has been banned “for any work-related tasks or personal use.”

The Navy highlighted the need to avoid the Chinese AI due to the “potential security and ethical concerns associated with the model’s origin and usage,” as detailed in the message.

DeepSeek, a start-up based in Hangzhou, launched its AI Assistant app earlier this month, and it quickly became the most downloaded free app on the US Apple App Store, outpacing its American counterpart, OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Later in the day, a spokesperson for the US Navy confirmed the email's authenticity to CNBC.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated on Tuesday that the US National Security Council is “looking into” the implications of DeepSeek’s AI.

The swift ascent of the Chinese model has stirred unrest in the US stock market, leading to significant losses for major tech companies like Nvidia as investors raise concerns over the potential disruption posed by DeepSeek’s affordable AI solutions to established industry players.

OpenAI CEO and co-founder Sam Altman commented on X on Monday that the Chinese AI was “an impressive model, particularly around what they are able to deliver for the price.” Yet, Altman asserted that his company would “obviously deliver much better models” and expressed that having a new competitor was “invigorating.”

Earlier, US President Donald Trump remarked that the launch of DeepSeek’s model served as a “wake-up call” for US tech companies to enhance their competitive edge.
