During a press conference at Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump was asked if he could “assure the world” that he would refrain from using “military or economic coercion” regarding these two territories. Trump responded, “No, I can’t assure you on either of those two. But I can say this, we need them for economic security.”
Trump has openly expressed interest in purchasing Greenland from Denmark. He stated, “People really don’t even know if Denmark has any legal right to it, but if they do, they should give it up because we need it,” emphasizing its status as an “absolute necessity” for national security.
On the same day, Trump's son, Donald Jr., arrived in Greenland on what he described as a “personal day trip” without any scheduled meetings with officials. He arrived on a Trump-branded aircraft and greeted a local crowd with a message from his father, saying that his father “says hello to everyone in Greenland.”
Elon Musk, a tech mogul and close ally of Trump, expressed support for the acquisition on X, suggesting that the people of Greenland “want to be part of America” and would be “most welcome.”
However, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reiterated on Tuesday that Greenland is “not for sale” and emphasized, “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders.”
Geographically, Greenland is the largest island in the world, located between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans. It hosts a significant US military base and is strategically positioned on the shortest route from North America to Europe. The territory has enjoyed home rule from Denmark since 1979.
Additionally, Trump has conveyed his intention to regain control of the “vital” Panama Canal, which was handed over to Panama in 1977 by former President Jimmy Carter. Panama's President Jose Raul Mulino remarked in December that “every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent area belongs to Panama, and it will continue to be so.”
On Tuesday, Trump also announced plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, citing its “beautiful ring” and appropriateness. “That covers a lot of territory. The Gulf of America. What a beautiful name,” he stated.
