US Democratic Congressman Al Green from Texas announced that he is working on new articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. He was among the first to officially attempt to impeach the president during his initial term.
After being ejected from the House chamber for heckling Trump while he spoke to Congress, Green spoke to the press. “I was making it clear to the president that he has no mandate to cut Medicaid,” he explained when asked about his outburst that led to his removal.
He also expressed that his constituents are fearful about how Trump’s budget cuts might impact their health care coverage. “I’m also working on my articles of impeachment,” he added. “This president is unfit. He should not hold the office. Thirty-four felony convictions, two times impeached,” the congressman stated.
Last year, Trump was found guilty on 34 felony counts related to falsifying business records to conceal “hush money” payments to an adult film star. He faced impeachment twice by the House of Representatives during his first term, in 2019 and 2021, but was acquitted by the Senate both times.
Green was one of the first to introduce articles of impeachment against Trump in 2017, well ahead of the broader Democratic push for the measure. “I want him to know that his budget calls for deep cuts in Medicaid,” Green remarked on Tuesday.
Last month, Republicans advanced significant spending plans that include massive budget cuts projected for the next decade. Of the $880 billion in planned cuts allocated to the Energy and Commerce Committee, which oversees Medicaid, specific reductions to the health care program were not detailed. Although GOP leaders have repeatedly stated they do not intend to cut Medicaid funding, concerns about its future persist.
Earlier this February, Trump insisted that the program would remain unaffected by his budgetary trimming efforts. “Social security, Medicaid, none of that stuff is going to be touched,” Trump told Fox News during an interview with his new government efficiency czar, Elon Musk.
