US conservatives attribute California's inadequate fire response to 'woke' policies
Donald Trump Jr. has criticized the Los Angeles Fire Department for prioritizing "virtue signaling" over actual competency.

Conservative commentators have linked the department’s perceived inadequacies in addressing the recent wildfires that have wreaked havoc in the city to failed diversity policies. The wildfires have already burned over 20,000 acres, resulting in at least five fatalities and the destruction of more than 2,000 homes and businesses. With Santa Ana winds intensifying the fires, over 100,000 residents have been evacuated, prompting the state to declare a state of emergency.

In a Thursday post on X, Donald Trump Jr. asserted that the inadequate response to the wildfires in the Democrat-led state stemmed from the fire department's emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion policies. He wrote, “Can we rename DEI to DIE since that’s what seems to happen to the people downstream of those who place woke virtue signaling far above competency.”

Others have highlighted that California reportedly allocated around $500 million for DEI initiatives, while liberal media outlets have raised concerns over the prevalence of white male firefighters. Prominent conservative pundit Matt Walsh commented on X, stating, “Los Angeles deliberately set out to exclude white men from becoming firefighters, and now they don’t have enough firefighters to prevent their city from burning to the ground,” adding that “DEI is a cancer that destroys everything it touches.”

Additionally, users on X have criticized President Joe Biden for seemingly overlooking the crisis in California while approving an additional $500 million in military aid for Ukraine. Some have pointed out that the Biden administration had earlier provided gear and rescue tools to 16 Ukrainian fire departments, yet California’s own services were reportedly lacking crucial resources to battle the wildfires.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has faced backlash for allegedly prioritizing environmental politics over effective fire management. President-elect Donald Trump has called for Newsom's resignation, accusing him of valuing “an essentially worthless fish” over the state’s residents by rejecting a bill intended to allow millions of gallons of water to flow into California.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has also been under fire for traveling to Africa over the weekend despite warnings about an impending windstorm. Last year, she cut the city's fire department budget by over $17 million.
