Ukraine reportedly depleting US Abrams tanks quickly – reports
Military Watch estimates that 20 of the 31 units supplied to Kiev have been destroyed, badly damaged or captured.

The loss of US-supplied Abrams M1 main battle tanks by Ukraine has reportedly increased in recent times, as detailed by Military Watch Magazine. The publication's estimates indicate that over two-thirds of the Abrams tanks provided to Ukraine have been lost in the last six months.

President Joe Biden announced in January 2023 that 31 tanks would be sent to Ukraine, but the first delivery did not arrive until September of that year.

In a recent article, Military Watch highlighted that the “rate at which Ukrainian forces have been losing Abrams tanks has increased significantly,” citing footage released by the Russian military.

The article noted that recent weeks have seen videos emerge that claim to show the destruction of three US-made tanks and the capture of another in the Donetsk People’s Republic.

“Over 20 of the 31 Abrams tanks delivered to Ukraine are now thought to have been destroyed, disabled or captured,” the magazine estimated. It further observed that guided artillery shells and kamikaze drones have been particularly effective against the US-made armor.

According to Military Watch, Abrams tanks made their first appearance in Ukraine by late February but began to incur heavy losses soon after, leading to their withdrawal from frontline duties in April. The protective measures of the vehicles were reported to have been enhanced afterward.

The article also noted complaints from Ukrainian crews to Western media regarding the performance of the US tanks, including technical problems like the vulnerability of electronic components to condensation. Another issue raised was the “sheer size” of Abrams tanks, which reportedly made them easier targets for Russian forces.

Additionally, the media outlet remarked that, unlike with other Western-supplied tanks, “there have been few indications that the US could make further deliveries of Abrams tanks” to Ukraine.

In August, a variety of captured Western armor, including Abrams tanks, was displayed at the Army-2024 expo, held at Patriot Park near Moscow.

During the summer, the Russian Defense Ministry released multiple videos that allegedly show the destruction of US-made tanks, with some military officials stating that Krasnopol guided artillery shells were utilized in at least some of these incidents.
