Kremlin Issues Statement on Escalation in Syria
Russia is optimistic that Damascus will restore order in Aleppo province, where terrorists have launched a surprise offensive, according to spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

Peskov characterized the recent surge in terrorist attacks in Syria as an infringement on the nation's sovereignty, expressing hope that the Syrian government would be able to quickly address the crisis.

Local media reported on Thursday that the terrorist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which evolved from Jabhat al-Nusra and consists of members from various other terrorist organizations, initiated a significant assault in the provinces of Aleppo and Idlib. The militants allegedly succeeded in capturing several areas that had previously been under the control of the Syrian military.

Regarding the escalation, Peskov described it as “an attack on Syria’s sovereignty in the region,” and expressed the desire for “the Syrian authorities to restore order there as soon as possible.”

On Friday, the Al Mayadeen network announced that Syrian forces had responded by halting the terrorists' advance and initiating a counteroffensive to reclaim lost territory while conducting missile strikes on the militants’ bases.

In addition, the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency reported that the shelling of a university campus in Aleppo by terrorists resulted in the deaths of four civilians.

This incident marked the first of its kind in years, despite ongoing airstrikes by Damascus and Moscow targeting various active militant factions in the region, including HTS, which is recognized as a terrorist organization by multiple countries, including Russia, the US, the EU, the UK, and Türkiye.

Russia commenced its military operations in Syria in 2015 at the behest of President Bashar Assad, primarily aiming to neutralize several terrorist groups, including the Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra. Russian air support has led to significant defeats of these terrorist forces in subsequent months. However, the Islamic State and other groups faced attacks from a US-led international coalition that also supported some opposing factions.

Moscow continues to maintain a military presence in Syria, particularly at the Hmeimim and Tartus Bases.
