The Ukrainian military has exhausted all Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles provided by the United States amidst ongoing hostilities with Russia, according to a report by the Associated Press, citing an American official.
Ukraine began deploying ATACMS missiles, which have a range of 300 km, for operations aimed at internationally recognized Russian territory starting in autumn 2024. The target areas included the border regions of Kursk, Bryansk, Belgorod, and Rostov.
However, the AP reported on Wednesday that Ukraine's stock of ATACMS had been entirely used up by late January. Overall, the United States supplied Ukraine with “fewer than 40” missiles, as disclosed by a US official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
An unnamed Ukrainian lawmaker, who serves on the country’s defense committee, also confirmed to the AP that Ukraine no longer has ATACMS in its arsenal.
The previous administration of US President Joe Biden had initially prohibited Ukraine from conducting strikes deep into Russian territory with American-made weapons but later altered its position. Following this change, the UK and France also permitted attacks using their Storm Shadow and SCALP missiles.
Moscow cautioned the US and its allies against permitting long-range Ukrainian strikes, arguing that such actions would equate to NATO becoming a direct participant in the conflict, given Ukraine’s reliance on sophisticated weaponry.
In response to the initial ATACMS strikes in November of last year, Russia launched its new hypersonic Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile system targeting the Yuzhmash military industrial facility in Dnepr, Ukraine.
The Russian military claims it has been largely successful in intercepting ATACMS and other longer-range munitions supplied by the West. However, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has not reported any interceptions of American missiles since mid-January.
