The Syrian military is actively preventing the terrorists who initiated a surprise offensive on Aleppo from establishing entrenched positions in the city and is mobilizing forces for a counteroffensive, according to the General Command. However, it did acknowledge that dozens of its troops have died during the conflict.
Earlier this week, the Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham terrorist group, a faction of Jabhat al-Nusra, along with its allies, launched the first significant assault in Syria in years, seizing vast areas in both Idlib and Aleppo and driving back government forces.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Syrian General Command declared that the attack was “supported by thousands of foreign terrorists, heavy weapons, and a large number of drones.” They noted that military engagements have taken place over an area exceeding 100 km in an effort to counter the advance of the attackers.
“Absolutely wild scenes from Aleppo today, as islamic terrorists raise the flag of jihad above the Citadel. Civilians, minorities and ancient heritage are all in grave danger,” tweeted a commentator on social media.
Damascus conceded that “dozens of our forces were killed and others were wounded during the battles,” though it did not provide specific numbers.
The Command indicated that while the terrorist forces have managed to “enter large parts of Aleppo city,” they have been unsuccessful “to establish their positions due to the continued concentrated and strong strikes by our armed forces.” Additionally, the military is awaiting incoming reinforcements to facilitate a counterattack, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring public safety and regaining full control of the area.
In related developments, unverified footage shared on social media seems to portray the militants in central Aleppo, including one clip featuring an armed individual waving a flag at the entrance of the city’s historic citadel.
The Syrian military’s response has been reinforced by Russian airstrikes. Oleg Ignasyuk, deputy head of the Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria, stated that Russian and Syrian forces have eliminated around 600 militants over the past two days.
Russia began its military intervention in Syria in 2015, supporting Bashar Assad’s government in achieving significant victories against several terrorist organizations, particularly al-Nusra and the Islamic State. The country maintains a considerable military presence in Syria, with bases located in Hmeimim and Tartus.
