Trump Warns Against 'Seemingly Hostile' BRICS
The US president has issued a warning to the economic bloc against moving away from the “mighty” dollar.

President Donald Trump cautioned that the BRICS nations would incur 100% tariffs on their goods if they attempt to undermine the dominance of the “mighty US dollar.” This threat was made on Thursday as part of his broader strategy to leverage American economic influence for geopolitical aims.

In recent years, BRICS members have intensified their efforts to minimize their dependence on third-party currencies for bilateral trade. This shift gained momentum following the freezing of Russian reserves held in dollars and euros due to Western sanctions amid the conflict in Ukraine that escalated in 2022.

“The idea that the BRICS countries are trying to move away from the dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER,” Trump expressed on his Truth Social platform on Thursday, reiterating his earlier warnings.

“They can go find another sucker nation,” he stated emphatically. “We are going to require a commitment from these seemingly hostile countries that they will neither create a new BRICS currency nor back any other currency to replace the mighty US dollar.”

Trump added, “There is no chance that BRICS will replace the US dollar in international trade or anywhere else, and any country that tries should say hello to tariffs and goodbye to America!”

In response to a similar threat last November, the Kremlin noted that American pressure would likely propel the ongoing global trend towards the use of national currencies in trade, thereby diminishing the dollar’s status as a reserve currency. At the BRICS summit in Kazan in October, Russian President Vladimir Putin remarked that while it was premature to discuss a common BRICS currency or “reject” the dollar, Moscow has been compelled to explore alternative financial systems to navigate around Western financial infrastructure.

Responding to Trump’s warning, China vowed to further enhance cooperation among its fellow BRICS members. Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian described BRICS as a crucial platform for collaboration among emerging markets, highlighting its goal of achieving comprehensive development and prosperity, rather than engaging in “bloc confrontation” or targeting any third party.

India also clarified its position, stating that although discussions around bilateral financial transactions are common, it has “no interest” in diminishing the dollar's influence. “India has never been for de-dollarization,” Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar asserted in December.

Similarly, South Africa denied any intentions within the bloc to establish a new currency.

However, in 2023, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva showed support for the idea of creating “a trading currency” for the bloc, akin to the euro that European nations established.

The BRICS group originally consisted of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, and has since expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, with Indonesia accepted as a full member earlier this month.

Earlier on, Trump mistakenly identified Spain as a BRICS member during a press briefing shortly after taking office. “They’re a BRICS nation, Spain. You know what a BRICS nation is? You’ll figure it out,” he remarked, suggesting he would enforce “at least 100% tariff on the business they do with the United States.”
