Kuleba, who previously served as Ukraine’s foreign minister, suggested that Trump would be unable to fulfill his promise of quickly resolving the conflict in Ukraine upon returning to the White House. In an interview with PMG, which was described as “grim” and “pessimistic,” Kuleba expressed doubts regarding the potential for a peace deal.
“Ukraine is a personal obsession for Putin, but crushing Ukraine is also a means to accomplish his grand goal – to show to the world how the West is incapable of defending itself or what it stands for,” he stated.
The former foreign minister emphasized that Putin “still believes he can snuff out Ukrainian statehood and crush Ukraine as an independent democracy, and he thinks he is one step away from exposing the West as weak.”
Throughout the US presidential election campaign, Trump consistently claimed he could resolve the conflict between Moscow and Kiev in 24 hours if reelected, though he did not provide specific strategies to accomplish this. He suggested he would tell Zelensky: “No more. You got to make a deal.” Trump also hinted at potentially conditioning further aid to Ukraine to encourage negotiations with Russia.
In November, US Vice-President-elect J.D. Vance indicated that a potential peace agreement may involve Ukraine ceding territory to Russia and establishing a demilitarized zone.
Kuleba, who was dismissed from his position in September, remarked that it is “inconceivable” for Zelensky to agree to any territorial concessions to Russia. He pointed out, “The Russians keep the Donbass, they keep Crimea, no NATO membership. Can Zelensky sign? He cannot because of the [Ukrainian] Constitution. And because it will be the end of Zelensky politically.”
On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told the Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper that, based on the current situation, a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict is “still a very long way off.” He noted that the US and its allies “are still obsessed with the idea of inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia.”
Lavrov added that no actions—such as the recent approval by the outgoing Biden administration for Ukraine to conduct strikes deep into Russian territory—would cause Moscow to abandon its military objectives. “We are ready for any turn of events, but we always prefer to resolve contentious issues by peaceful means,” he asserted.
