US President-elect Donald Trump has announced his nomination of Matt Gaetz as attorney general for his upcoming administration, set to take office in January. The Republican representative has a history of criticizing military aid directed to Ukraine.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday, Trump emphasized the necessity to tackle what he termed the “partisan Weaponization of our Justice System.”
“Matt will end Weaponized Government, protect our Borders, dismantle Criminal Organizations and restore Americans’ badly-shattered Faith and Confidence in the Justice Department,” Trump wrote. In response, Gaetz expressed his gratitude on X, describing it as “an honor to serve” in such a significant position.
Gaetz’s nomination is likely to provoke a contentious confirmation process within the Senate, as various senators have already reacted with surprise. If confirmed, he would lead a Justice Department that had previously investigated him for alleged sex crimes, though no charges were ever brought against him.
In February 2024, Gaetz and several conservative lawmakers expressed their concerns regarding military aid to Ukraine amidst its ongoing conflict with Russia. They contended that the continued assistance was merely prolonging the conflict without presenting a clear resolution. Gaetz referred to the aid packages as funds “slushing around the money-laundering capitals of the world.”
His critical viewpoint on Ukraine was made clear during Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s address to Congress in 2022, where Gaetz remained seated as many of his colleagues stood in support.
In addition to Gaetz, Trump has nominated Florida Senator Marco Rubio for the position of secretary of state and former congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard as the next director of national intelligence.
