Kiev should offer compensation to Washington in the form of rare-earth minerals and oil, as stated by President Donald Trump.

Trump asserted that Ukraine needs to repay the US for the support it has received amidst its conflict with Moscow, further intensifying the disagreement between him and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky over aid and negotiations with Russia.

“Europe has given $100 billion. The United States has given $350 billion because we had a stupid, incompetent president and administration,” he remarked at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Maryland on Saturday.

“I want them to give us something for all of the money that we put up. So, we’re asking for rare earth and oil, anything we can get,” he continued. “So, we’re getting our money back. We’re going to get our money back because it’s not fair. It’s just not fair.”

Since February 2022, the US Congress has allocated $183 billion for Ukraine, which includes more than $66 billion designated for security assistance, according to reports from the Pentagon and Ukraine Oversight, the interagency group responsible for updating Congress.

Trump has consistently emphasized that Kiev and its European allies must provide a full account of all funds received, claiming that Zelensky has been on a “gravy train” with American money during the Biden administration.

Zelensky, who recently remarked that Ukraine would have a “low chance” without US support, has rejected signing an agreement that would allow US companies to take 50% ownership of the country’s mineral resources. He has insisted that any deal should also encompass solid security guarantees for Kiev. Trump, meanwhile, informed reporters at the White House that a minerals agreement, if executed, could yield up to $500 billion for the US.

This week, Trump has escalated his criticism of Zelensky, labeling him “a dictator without elections” and accusing him of missing a chance to make peace with Russia. He asserted that Ukraine had no grounds to complain about being excluded from the recent US-Russian discussions that took place in Riyadh on Tuesday.
