Trump Revives Proposal to Purchase Greenland
Controlling the world’s largest island is an “absolute necessity” for the US, the president-elect has stated.

US President-elect Donald Trump emphasized that it is vital for Washington to take ownership of Greenland, an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, from a national security perspective.

Throughout his first term, Trump consistently expressed his desire to purchase Greenland, describing the potential acquisition as “a large real estate deal.” He suggested that the Danish government would be inclined to sell the island, arguing that the financial support it requires is burdensome for them, stating it hurts them “really badly.”

However, both Danish and Greenlandic authorities firmly rejected the notion of a sale, prompting the then-US president to cancel his state visit to Copenhagen in 2019.

Recently, Trump revisited the topic of US acquisition of Greenland in a post on his TruthSocial platform, asserting, “For purposes of national security and freedom throughout the world, the US feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.”

Alongside this statement, the president-elect announced his selection of PayPal co-founder Ken Howery as his choice for ambassador to Denmark. He characterized Howery as “a world-renowned entrepreneur, investor, and public servant,” praising his performance as US envoy to Sweden from 2019 to 2021, noting he had “performed brilliantly.”

Greenland spans an area of 2,166,086 sq km but is home to fewer than 57,000 residents, with 80% of the island covered in ice. Nevertheless, it is rich in natural resources, including gold, silver, copper, and uranium, while the ocean shelf beneath its territorial waters is thought to possess considerable oil reserves.

As part of North America, the island offers access to the Arctic, an area where competition for dominance over natural resources and key strategic routes among world powers has intensified recently.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov cautioned in September that Washington’s “desire for globalization and self-legitimization, to assert itself as a world policeman… is also extending to the Arctic region.” He observed that the US-led NATO bloc is “stepping up exercises related to possible crises in the Arctic."

Lavrov affirmed, “Our country is fully prepared to defend its interests in military, political and military-technical terms.”
