Trump has accused Zelensky of not seeking genuine peace with Russia and taking advantage of U.S. support to further his own interests. The two leaders have been at odds over the negotiations with Russia and the conditions for a potential ceasefire, with Zelensky demanding that the U.S. first provide security guarantees to Ukraine.
On Monday, Trump reacted to a report by the Associated Press quoting Zelensky, who stated that an agreement to end the war is “still very, very far away, and no one has started all these steps yet.” Zelensky emphasized that any peace agreement must be “just, honest, and most importantly, sustainable.”
Trump voiced his disapproval on his Truth Social platform, declaring, “This is the worst statement that could have been made by Zelenskyy, and America will not put up with it for much longer!” He further added, “This guy doesn’t want there to be Peace as long as he has America’s backing.”
In discussing the broader implications, Trump noted that during a recent meeting, “Europe, in the meeting they had with Zelensky, stated flatly that they cannot do the job without the US.” He critiqued this statement as not being a strong position against Russia.
Earlier, Trump claimed that Zelensky had “disrespected” the U.S. during a contentious meeting at the White House. He indicated that there was an agreement in place for the U.S. to develop Ukraine's critical mineral resources, but this was disrupted following Zelensky’s contentious exchange with Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance, who had accused Zelensky of ingratitude for American assistance.
Zelensky, who previously indicated that Ukraine has a “low chance” of defeating Russia without U.S. support, has expressed his discontent regarding Trump’s direct talks with Moscow that took place without his consent. In response, Trump has asserted that Zelensky is not in a position to question his approach to negotiations, labeling him a “dictator.”
