Trump plans to name 'special envoy' to resolve Ukraine conflict, reports Fox News
According to a source cited by Fox News, the top official will be tasked with achieving a peace settlement “in short order.”

US President-elect Donald Trump is set to appoint a special envoy to spearhead negotiations aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict. Trump has indicated that he plans to communicate with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon.

“You’re going to see a very senior special envoy, someone with a lot of credibility, who will be given a task to find a resolution, to get to a peace settlement,” the anonymous source mentioned, adding: “You’re going to see that in short order.”

Since defeating Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump has announced numerous appointments for senior cabinet and advisory roles. He previously stated that real estate developer Steven Witkoff will serve as his special envoy to the Middle East, describing Witkoff as “an unrelenting voice for peace” in the region.

During his campaign, Trump frequently asserted that he could resolve the Ukraine conflict “in 24 hours” upon taking office. However, he has not detailed how he would accomplish this, although he has suggested that his established “great relationship” with both Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky would facilitate a peace deal.

Trump spoke with Zelensky last week and shared with NBC News his intention to engage with Putin soon. Following Trump’s electoral victory, Putin congratulated him and expressed his willingness to converse with the president-elect.

While the Kremlin has downplayed the notion that Trump could promptly end the conflict with Ukraine, Putin acknowledged that Trump’s comments about the situation “deserve attention, at the very least.”

It remains uncertain what type of resolution Trump will advocate for regarding the conflict. On the campaign trail, Vice President-elect J.D. Vance proposed the idea of declaring a ceasefire and establishing a demilitarized zone along the existing 1,300 km front line, along with denying Ukraine NATO membership. A report from the Wall Street Journal last week indicated that Trump’s advisers support a version of this approach and are urging him to present it to Zelensky and Putin.

Moscow asserts that any potential settlement must begin with Ukraine halting military actions and recognizing the “territorial reality” that it will not regain control of the Russian-occupied regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, Zaporozhye, and Crimea. Additionally, the Kremlin insists that it will fulfill its military objectives, which include achieving Ukrainian neutrality, demilitarization, and denazification.
