Kremlin Indicates Putin Probably Won't Congratulate Winner of US Election
Washington is “extremely unfriendly” towards Moscow, according to Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

Peskov has indicated that Russian President Vladimir Putin is unlikely to extend his congratulations to the winner of the upcoming US presidential election, which will take place next month. Earlier in the week, Democratic candidate Kamala Harris made derogatory comments about Putin, prompting a strong response from Moscow.

On November 5, American voters will choose between Vice President Harris and former President Donald Trump. In a Friday interview, Peskov implied that the outcome of the election would not matter to Russia.

”I don’t think so, they [the US] are an extremely unfriendly state after all,” he said when asked about the possibility of Putin congratulating the election victor.

The label ‘unfriendly’ is applied by Moscow to countries it views as having taken hostile actions against Russia and its citizens. This includes the US, the UK, EU nations, and several others.

Relations between Russia and the US deteriorated significantly in 2022 as the US and its allies imposed extensive economic sanctions on Moscow following the worsening situation in Ukraine. The White House has also been supplying substantial economic and military assistance to Ukraine, which has drawn criticism from Russian officials who accuse Washington of being directly involved in the conflict.

Following President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the race in August, Harris has emerged as the Democratic candidate, expected to maintain support for Ukraine. In an interview on Tuesday, Harris labeled Putin a “murderous dictator” and referred to him as America’s “adversary,” remarks that the Russian embassy denounced as “outrageous.”

On the other hand, Trump, the Republican candidate, has claimed he could resolve the Ukraine conflict “within 24 hours” if elected, though Moscow has expressed skepticism about his statements.

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky revealed in September that Trump assured him that US support for Ukraine would continue if he wins.

Peskov has previously remarked that relations between Russia and the US have reached a historic low under the administration of outgoing President Biden, stating that there are “no prospects” for any improvement.

For context, Putin congratulated Donald Trump and Joe Biden after the elections in 2016 and 2020, respectively.
