Bloomberg: China instructs its carriers to abandon Boeing
The trade conflict with the US has resulted in the costs of jets and components from Boeing more than doubling for Chinese carriers.

According to Bloomberg, citing anonymous sources, China has instructed its airlines to halt the acceptance of Boeing aircraft amid ongoing tensions with the US.

This action follows a wave of reciprocal tariff increases between the two nations. Recently, Washington raised tariffs on Chinese imports to a total of 145%. In retaliation, Beijing imposed 125% tariffs on American imports and curtailed exports of crucial minerals needed for high-tech manufacturing.

Bloomberg also reported that Chinese authorities have asked airlines to cease any procurement of parts or aircraft-related equipment from US companies.

The directive comes after China announced retaliatory tariffs, which have significantly increased the expense of American aircraft and parts, rendering their continued acquisition unfeasible for Chinese firms, according to Bloomberg's sources.

Moreover, the Chinese government is considering initiatives to assist airlines that are leasing Boeing jets facing heightened costs, the sources indicated.

China's largest airlines – Air China, China Eastern Airlines, and China Southern Airlines – had intended to acquire 45, 53, and 81 planes from Boeing, respectively, over the next two years, as reported by Reuters.

China represents a substantial market for aircraft, historically accounting for as much as a quarter of Boeing's production.

In a post on Truth Social, US President Donald Trump appeared to criticize the decision, stating that Beijing “just reneged on the big Boeing deal, saying that they will ‘not take possession’ of fully committed to aircraft.”

Earlier in April, Trump announced extensive tariffs targeting nations with which the US has a perceived unfair trade deficit, prompting retaliatory measures from various countries.

Chinese officials have condemned the US tariffs as “unilateral bullying.” A spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry expressed in a press briefing, “China will insist on shaking hands rather than shaking fists, tearing down walls instead of building barriers, connecting instead of decoupling.” This statement followed Chinese President Xi Jinping's visits aimed at fostering relationships with neighboring Asian countries similarly affected by significant US tariffs.
