Doctors say Brazil's Lula is recuperating following an emergency brain operation
Surgeons have drained bleeding from the president’s skull following an injury three weeks ago.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is now recuperating in an intensive care unit after undergoing emergency surgery aimed at alleviating pressure from a brain hemorrhage, his medical team reported on Tuesday.

“The president is stable, talking, eating and will remain under observation over the next few days,” stated doctor Roberto Kalil during a press conference.

Earlier in the day, a hospital statement was shared on the president’s X account detailing his medical status. At 79, Lula complained of a headache and was admitted to Hospital Sirio-Libanes in Brasilia on Monday evening for a magnetic resonance imaging procedure.

The imaging revealed an intracranial hemorrhage, which the doctors attributed to an incident on October 19, when Lula fell at home and struck his head. He underwent an “uneventful” surgery to drain the hematoma at the hospital’s Sao Paulo branch and was placed in an ICU for monitoring, the statement noted.

During the press conference, Lula’s medical team mentioned that they anticipate the president will be able to resume his duties early next week.

The incident in October caused Lula to miss several planned international engagements, including the BRICS leaders’ summit in Russia. Brazil is one of the founding members of this group of major non-Western economies.

Lula has explained to the media that he slipped in the bathroom while trimming his nails and hit the back of his head, resulting in several stitches. He has been undergoing regular MRI tests to monitor for any signs of bleeding and is taking preventative medication.
