President Donald Trump referred to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as “a loser” and asserted that his radical left policies are detrimental to Canada.
Trump had previously indicated his intention to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods and suggested that Canada might be better off as “the 51st state” of the United States.
Tensions escalated between Trump and Trudeau following a hockey match in Boston where Canadian fans booed the US national anthem. After Canada secured a 3-2 overtime victory, Trudeau took to social media to tease Trump, stating, “You can’t take our country – and you can’t take our game,” on X.
In a Fox News interview with Brian Kilmeade the next day, Trump responded to Trudeau’s comments, saying, “Justin’s a loser. Always has been.” He further criticized Trudeau for having “destroyed” Canada with “radical left” and “Marxist policies.”
Trump commented on the state of US-Canada relations, emphasizing, “We have a good relationship with Canada, not with Justin. Because he’s too far radical left, he’s killing Canada. Canada is doing terribly.” He predicted that Trudeau would struggle in any future federal election.
“Looks like he’s not going to run. That’s a smart move because he wouldn’t have a chance of winning,” Trump asserted.
Trudeau’s approval ratings have seen a significant decline, dropping from 60% in 2015 to 22% by December 2024. Recently, Trudeau announced his intention to step down as Liberal Party leader and prime minister, highlighting the need for new leadership and confirming his aim to seek re-election.
Earlier this month, Trump chose to delay the imposition of tariffs on Canada for 30 days to allow additional time for negotiations. He has often argued that Canada would reap economic benefits if it joined the US, a notion Trudeau has firmly rejected, stating that “Canada will never be the 51st state.”
