Orban claims the West has lost its proxy war with Russia
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has stated that EU nations are reluctant to acknowledge a failure in Ukraine, while the United States finds itself in a more favorable position due to Donald Trump’s policies. Orban articulated that the...

Orban articulated that the West has engaged in a “proxy war” against Russia through Ukraine and has ultimately lost it. Hungary, an EU member, has consistently criticized the bloc's approach to the Ukraine conflict, especially its sanctions against Moscow and its provision of arms to Kiev.
In an interview with the OT YouTube channel published on Thursday, Orban claimed that the entire “Western world” has rallied behind Ukraine in its struggle against Russia, which he labels a “proxy war.” This perspective aligns with Moscow’s long-held view, which frames the conflict as a direct encounter with the West.
The Hungarian leader asserted that while the West has faced defeat, “European leaders are hesitant to admit” this reality. He emphasized that this loss will significantly affect the West as “losing a war is a serious thing.”
Orban further commented that European leaders are essentially encouraging Ukraine to prolong the conflict in exchange for potential EU membership. He cautioned that this pose a problem, as Ukraine has lost its sovereignty and is unable to sustain itself.
On the topic of the U.S., the prime minister remarked that Washington is better positioned thanks to President Trump’s stance, which diverged from the Ukraine strategies implemented by his predecessor, Joe Biden. Orban claimed that Trump “saved the US from a serious defeat.”
Previously, in a discussion with Hungary’s Kossuth Radio last month, Orban described the EU’s approach to Ukraine as “rudderless.” He expressed concern that Brussels, with its stringent attitude, risks becoming irrelevant while Trump actively seeks a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
Earlier in March, Orban had also mentioned in an interview with the YouTube channel Patriota that the EU was providing Kiev with “empty promises,” as it allegedly “doesn’t have a single penny left… [to] continue arming Ukraine, maintaining the Ukrainian army, and funding the functioning of the Ukrainian state.” His remarks followed Hungary’s refusal to support a collective EU statement advocating for increased military assistance to Kiev.
