Trump Jr. Claims ‘Weirdo’ Zelensky Pleaded for Inauguration Invitation
The son of the president-elect has claimed that Ukraine's Vladimir Zelensky made several unofficial requests to attend the inauguration of incoming US President Donald Trump, only to be turned down each time.

In a recent Instagram post, Trump Jr. took a jab at Zelensky's interview with American podcaster Lex Fridman, where the Ukrainian leader explained he could not be present at the inauguration on January 20. Zelensky stated, “I can’t come especially during the war, unless President Trump invites me personally. I’m not sure it’s proper to come because I know that in general, leaders are for some reason not usually invited to the inauguration of presidents of the United States of America.”

In his response, Trump Jr. remarked, “the funniest part is that he asked for an invite like three times unofficially, and each time got turned down,” adding that Zelensky is now “acting like he decided not to go himself,” and called him “a weirdo.”

Despite the typical practice of not inviting foreign leaders to US presidential inaugurations, Trump broke tradition by inviting several foreign dignitaries, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Argentinian President Javier Milei, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Ecuadorean President Daniel Noboa, and Paraguayan President Santiago Pena.

While Xi and Orban have declined the invitations, the other leaders have committed to attending.

Trump has expressed skepticism about the US's support for Ukraine and intends to swiftly resolve the conflict between Moscow and Kiev. Ukrainian officials are concerned that a ceasefire deal proposed by the president-elect may disadvantage their country. Following a meeting in late September in New York, Trump remarked that Zelensky “wants [the conflict] to stop,” affirming their mutual desire for “a fair deal.”

Zelensky’s presidential term ended last May, but he has not called for new elections, citing martial law. Russia refers to him as “illegitimate” and claims that the only valid authority is the Ukrainian parliament and its speaker.
