Trump Directs Release of Files on JFK, RFK, and MLK
US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to declassify government documents concerning the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. during the 1960s, according to reports from multiple news outlets on Thursday.

Under the president's order, the director of national intelligence is directed to create a plan within 15 days for the “full and complete release” of the files related to JFK’s assassination and will outline a plan within 45 days for the release of documents concerning the assassinations of RFK and King.

Trump made this commitment during a victory rally at the Capital One Arena in Washington last weekend, prior to his inauguration on Monday.

The assassinations of President Kennedy in 1963, his brother Robert in 1968, and Martin Luther King, a Nobel Peace Prize winner and civil rights champion, continue to provoke debate and speculation in the United States.

The National Archives and Records Administration holds five million records tied to President Kennedy’s assassination alone. In the 1990s, the federal government mandated that the majority of these records be released by October 2017, although the president retains the authority to impose exemptions. Between 3,000 and 4,000 documents have yet to be made public.

During his first presidential term, Trump also promised to declassify documents and did authorize the release of several. However, he kept a significant number classified, citing national security issues, allegedly under pressure from the CIA and FBI at the time.

A video of Trump signing the order has circulated on social media, where he is heard saying, “That is a big one. A lot of people have been waiting for this for years. For decades.” He further remarked, “Everything will be revealed,” as he finalized the signing.
