Trump Says He Would Meet with Putin Immediately
The US president has asserted that his Russian counterpart “would like to see” him.

US President Donald Trump has expressed his eagerness to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin as soon as possible to discuss a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.

Having taken office on Monday, Trump has consistently committed to swiftly negotiating a settlement between Russia and Ukraine.

“From what I hear, Putin would like to see me, and we’ll leave as soon as we can. I’d meet immediately,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday. “Every day we don’t meet, soldiers are being killed on the battlefield.”

The Kremlin has indicated its willingness for such discussions. However, speaking to reporters earlier this week, Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, clarified that there were no plans for a phone call between Putin and Trump.

Reports suggest that Trump has instructed his Ukraine envoy, Keith Kellogg, to work towards a settlement between Moscow and Kiev within 100 days. On Wednesday, the US president warned of potential new sanctions on Russia if Putin does not agree to an unspecified "deal" aimed at ending the conflict.

“Such dialogue between the two presidents had occurred during Trump’s first term,” Peskov noted, adding that the Kremlin “has not received [such] signals so far.”

Russia maintains that Ukraine must forgo its ambition to join the US-led NATO alliance, opting instead for neutrality. Additionally, Putin has requested that Kiev renounce its claims to Crimea and four other regions that have voted to leave Ukraine and become part of Russia.

In a conversation with Bloomberg on Wednesday, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky emphasized that communication with Kiev should be a “priority” for the Trump administration. He mentioned that he would be open to negotiations if Trump could offer tangible “security guarantees” to Ukraine.
